If you stop to think about all the things that fall under the category of special needs, it quickly becomes apparent that it’s a very general term. Generalities are the opposite of what is needed by those who have special needs though. That’s why it’s so important for...
It is an honor and a privilege to be able to touch the lives of your children and your families as a pediatric dentist. Being a mom to two young girls, I try to treat each child as I would want my own to be treated. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help your child achieve optimal oral health.
Dr. Harlyn K. Susarla is a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist with an interest in dental public health. While growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, she was a competitive figure skater and violinist. After completing her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College, Dr. Harlyn obtained a Master of Public Health degree from Boston University (BU), with a focus on epidemiology and maternal and child health, while concurrently working as a pediatric dental assistant in BU’s school-based community health programs. This opportunity allowed her to interact firsthand with children from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom required significant dental care. Through these experiences, she learned how intricately connected public health is to pediatric dentistry. She also learned how, through collaboration, the pediatric dental team can advocate for their patients by providing an avenue for so many children, specifically those who would likely go without care, in order to “obtain optimal oral health care”.
Dr. Harlyn then completed her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Harvard University, and subsequently continued research work at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. She then went on to her pediatric residency at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where she helped establish an interdisciplinary team to address the global healthcare needs of pediatric oncology and transplant patients.
After residency, Dr. Harlyn and her family decided to establish their home base in the greater Seattle area. In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Harlyn has published more than 15 papers in the peer-reviewed literature and is a reviewer for the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and the Journal of Dental Education. She currently remains active in local, state, and national dental organizations to advocate for children’s oral health. Currently, Dr. Harlyn is the President of the Washington State Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Harlyn enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, attempting various culinary endeavors, traveling, and exploring all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer!
