When is the right time for my child to give up their pacifier?

Q: When is the right time for my child to give up their pacifier?

A: Pacifiers are often a great way to soothe your little one. They mimic the sucking pattern of nursing and bottle feeling, hence are familiar and instinctive. They are a common and normal part of infancy.  When to phase your child off their pacifier is one of the most common questions we get.  The main factor is the pacifier’s effect on your child’s oral growth and development. Prolonged pacifier use can lead to narrowing of the palate, an open bite, and an overjet. When stopped by the right time, these issues may self-correct and normal growth continues.

At Stellar Kids Dentistry, we love coaching our families on when and how to phase off the pacifier.  Both of my kids used them, so we have great tips to help!   Give us a call to schedule your child’s visit today! Click here to read the ADA’s article on thumb sucking and pacifier use.
